THE STORY OF ODD

our birth story

hey. thanks for being here.

i started ODDCRITIC out of equal parts love and hate. i love writing, i hate writing for corporations. i love having strong opinions, i hate being censored by a 45-year-old dude, probably a trekkie, probably living in the midwest, who somehow became a culture editor.

the freelance frustration—the hustle of contributing to outlets who made me downplay my own truth— got to a boiling point where i just said, fuck it, i’ll do it myself. i’ll create the outlet that i want to write for. i’ll become the editor-in-chief that i’ve always wanted. i’ll create a space for writers like me to freely discuss what they love and hate, in their own voice and at their own pace.

and yeah, i know, this is not a revolutionary idea. thousands of other outlets, zines, publications for film and culture critic exist. a lot of them are great. a lot of them are not. so what makes ODDCRITIC any different?

i don’t know, that’s subjective. but i think it’s as simple as taste. it’s our intentional curation of esoteric voices. it’s giving a platform to people who may not even bother pitching to a traditional outlet. it’s letting unpolished or niche sensibilities have their moment.

my hope is that ODDCRITIC will be a place for new writers to start their careers, and for seasoned writers to finally publish that piece that’s been collecting dust, and for there to be no cooler place on the internet to read articles.

dream big right xoxo
